PROCESSIONAL: What A Friend We… – #630

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,

All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful?
Who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Saviour, still our refuge;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

In His arms He’ll take and shield thee;
Thou wilt find a solace there.

Collect
Almighty God,
whose Son was revealed in majesty
before he suffered death upon the cross,
give us faith to perceive his glory,
that being strengthened by his grace
we may be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” But the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.” He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. Then he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.” But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.”
GENESIS 15:1-12, 17-18

Psalm
REFRAIN The Lord is my light and my salvation.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid?

When evildoers came upon me to eat up my flesh, it was they, my foes and my adversaries, who stumbled and fell. R

Though an army should encamp against me, yet my heart shall not be afraid;

And though war should rise up against me, yet will I put my trust in him. R

One thing have I asked of the Lord; one thing I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life;

To behold the fair beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. R

For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high upon a rock.

Even now he lifts up my head above my enemies round about me. R

Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness; I will sing and make music to the Lord. R

Hearken to my voice, O Lord, when I call; have mercy on me and answer me. You speak in my heart and say, “Seek my face.” Your face, Lord, will I seek. R

Hide not your face from me, nor turn away your servant in displeasure.

You have been my helper; cast me not away; do not forsake me, O God of my salvation.

Though my father and my mother forsake me, the Lord will sustain me. R

Show me your way, O Lord; lead me on a level path, because of my enemies.

Deliver me not into the hand of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen up against me, and also those who speak malice. R

What if I had not believed that I should see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!

O tarry and await the Lord’s pleasure; be strong, and he shall comfort your heart; wait patiently for the
Lord. R

A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS
Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.
PHILIPPIANS 3:17-4:1

Gospel
THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
ACCORDING TO LUKE
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” He said to them, “Go and tell that fox for me, ‘Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.’ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'”
LUKE 13:31-35

Or

THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
ACCORDING TO LUKE
Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

OFFERTORY: Fight The Good Fight – #175

Fight the good fight with all thy might,
Christ is thy strength and Christ thy right;
Lay hold on life and it shall be Thy joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race through God’s good grace;
Lift up thine eyes and seek his face.
Life with its path before us lies;
Christ is the way and Christ the prize.

Cast care aside, lean on thy guide;
His boundless mercy will provide;
Trust and the trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life and Christ its love.

Faint not, nor fear, his arms are near;
He changeth not and thou art dear.
Only believe and thou shalt see
That Christ is all in all to thee.

Prayer over the Gifts
God of wisdom,
may the light of the eternal Word,
our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
guide us to your glory.
We ask this in his name.

COMMUNION: In the Cross of Christ… #328

Son of God, Son of man, His life poured out for all
See His hands, see His scars, His love can’t be denied
Our God is high and lifted up

It is the cross, my only plea
The blood You shed delivers me
Our Savior’s arms are opened wide
A love so great, the cross of Christ

Every debt, all we owe, He bears it as His own
Brought to life, we are free to live in Christ alone
Our God is high and lifted up

See the Lamb of God
See the Father’s love
All to Jesus we owe
He paid it all

ABLUTION: Sweet, Sweet Spirit – #391

There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place,
And I know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord.
There are sweet expressions on each face,
And I know they feel the presence of the Lord.

Sweet Holy Spirit,
Sweet heavenly Dove,
Stay right here with us,
Filling us with Your love.
And for these blessings
We lift our hearts in praise.
Without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived
When we shall leave this place.

Prayer After Communion
Creator of heaven and earth,
we thank you for these holy mysteries,
which bring us now a share in the life to come,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

And thus surround the throne. (x 2)

REFRAIN
We’re marching to Zion,
Beautiful, beautiful Zion.
We’re marching upward to Zion,
The beautiful city of God.

Let those refuse to sing
Who never knew our God;
But children of the heav’nly King, (x 2)
May speak their joys abroad. (x 2)

The hill of Zion yields
A thousand sacred sweets
Before we reach the heav’nly fields, (x 2)
Or walk the golden streets. (x 2)

Then let our songs abound,
And every tear be dry.
We’re marching thro’ Immanuel’s ground, (x 2)
To fairer worlds on high. (x 2)
