PROCESSIONAL: Come, Thou Long-… – #244

Come, Thou long expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free.
From our fears and sins release us;
Let us find our rest in Thee.

Israel’s strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art,
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Born Thy people to deliver;
Born a Child and yet a King;
Born to reign in us for ever;
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.

Born Thy people to deliver;
Born a Child and yet a King;
Born to reign in us for ever;
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.

Lighting Of The Advent Candle

Leader:  I was glad when

they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”

All: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, that we may learn God’s ways and walk in God’s paths.

Our feet our standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Our feet our standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Our feet our standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Leader:   On this first Sunday of Advent, we light the candle of hope.

(The first candle is lit)

It is a call to ‘keep awake’ and it is a symbol of the hope we have in the promise of the

Lord’s coming.

Leader:  Let us pray,

O God of all hope, we thank you for all your promises which find their fulfillment in your Son. So we rejoice in his coming in the flesh and look for his appearing in glory.

By your Word and Holy Spirit make us ready to receive Christ truly as our only Lord

and Savior, and with thankfulness to praise him, now and for ever.

All: Amen.

HYMN: Light One Candle

Light one candle for hope, one bright candle for hope,
He brings hope to ev’ry heart, He comes!  He comes!

Light one candle for peace, one bright candle for peace,
He brings peace to ev’ry heart, He Comes! He Comes!
Light one candle for joy, one bright candle for joy,

Ev’ry nation will find salvation in Bethl’em’s baby boy.
Light one candle for love, one bright candle for love,
He brings love to ev’ry heart, He comes!  He Comes!

Almighty God,
give us grace to cast away the works of darkness
and put on the armour of light,
now in the time of this mortal life
in which your Son Jesus Christ
came to us in great humility,
that on the last day,
when he shall come again in his glorious majesty
to judge both the living and the dead,
we may rise to the life immortal;
through him who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

First Reading
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”
JEREMIAH 33:14-16

REFRAIN To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in you; let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

Let none who look to you be put to shame; let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes. R

Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. R

Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord. R

Gracious and upright is the Lord; therefore he teaches sinners in his way.

He guides the humble in doing right and teaches his way to the lowly.

All the paths of the Lord are love and faithfulness to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. R
PSALM 25:1-9

Second Reading
How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

GRADUAL: O Come, O Come,… – #245

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.

Shall come to thee,
O Israel!

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine Advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high
And order all things, far and nigh;
To us the path of knowledge show
And cause us in her ways to go.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
All peoples in one heart and mind.
Bid envy, strife and quarrels cease;
Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.

Jesus said, “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
LUKE 21:25-36

OFFERTORY: The Church’s One… – #401

The church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord.
She is his new creation
By water and the word:
From heav’n He came and sought her
To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her,
And for her life He died.

Elect from every nation,
Yet one o’er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation:
One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food;
And to one hope she presses,
With every grace endued.

‘Mid toil and tribulation
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
Of peace for evermore;
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blest
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest

Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won:
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we,
Like them, the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with Thee.

Prayer over the Gifts
God of love and power,
your word stirs within us
the expectation of the coming of your Son.
Accept all we offer you this day,
and sustain us with your promise of eternal life.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

COMMUNION: Let Us Break Bread… – #460

Let us break bread together
On our knees;
Let us break bread together
On our knees;

When I fall on my knees
With my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us drink wine together
On our knees;
Let us drink wine together
On our knees;

Let us praise God together
On our knees;
Let us praise God together
On our knees;

ABLUTION: Jesus Shall Reign – #375

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
Does its successive journeys run;
His kingdom spread from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

To Him shall endless prayer be made,
And endless praises crown His head.
His name like sweet perfume shall rise
With every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on His love with sweetest song,
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on His name.

Let every creature rise and bring
His grateful honours to our King;
Angels descend with songs again,
And earth repeat the loud “Amen!”

Prayer After Communion
God for whom we wait,
you have fed us with the bread of eternal life.
Keep us ever watchful,
that we may be ready to stand before the Son of man.
We ask this in the name of Christ the Lord.

RECESSIONAL: The Mighty God… – #72

The mighty God, the Lord,
hath spoken unto all;
from rising to the setting sun,
he unto earth doth call.

From Zion, his own hill,
where perfect beauty dwells,
Jehovah hath his glory shown,
in brightness that excels.

Our God shall surely come,
and silence shall not keep;
before him fire shall waste, and storms
tempestuous round him sweep.

He to the heav’ns above
shall then send forth his call,
and likewise to the earth, that he
may judge his people all.

“Together let my saints
unto me gathered be,
those that by sacrifice have made
a covenant with me.”

Then shall the heav’ns declare
his righteousness abroad;
because the Lord himself is judge,
yea, none is judge, but God.
